Where written numbers are needed

On a check, the amount is written in words so it cannot be easily altered, and the words take priority if they disagree with the figures. Legal contracts and invoices often spell out key amounts for the same reason. Writing numbers in full also helps with clarity in formal documents and for readers using screen readers.

How English number grouping works

English groups digits in threes and names each group: thousand, million, billion, trillion, and so on. So 2,500,000 becomes two million five hundred thousand.
